The important detail is not just that McLaren is getting a newer engine, but that Mercedes has already put the specification through its first live tests in the factory cars. That gives the works team the first pass at understanding how the unit behaves in competitive conditions, while a customer team arrives later with a package that should be more established operationally. In a tightly managed power-unit cycle, that gap can matter as much as the hardware itself.
For McLaren, the timing could be particularly useful. Spa is a circuit where top-end performance and efficiency are always central to the conversation, and any incremental engine gain can feed into straight-line speed as well as how a team manages energy over a lap.
